Takashi Fujimura's Thesis: Hitchcock-Hawksism

Hitchcock's Memoirs

1. Recollections of events that occurred after the start of the film, using newly created imagery:

● "THE 39 STEPS": A flashback of the scene where the murdered female spy gives information to Robert Donat.
● "DOWMHILL" (1927): A scene where the shopkeeper's daughter recounts the details of the theft.
● "The Farmer's Wife" (1928): A shot recalling the wedding party that has ended.
● "BLACKMAIL" (1929): Footage of the strange hand of the murdered painter.
● "CHANPAGNE" (1928): Close-ups of men.

2. Footage of events that occurred within the film's timeline but were not filmed, added later.

● "VERTIGO": Kim Novak's recollection of the actual murder scene in the church.
● "TORN CURTAIN": A short flashback inserted while the taxi driver is testifying to the police.
● "FRENZY" The scene where the waitress (Anna Massey) is murdered

3. Brief flashbacks of actual footage shown within the film's runtime:

● "The Lady Vanishes": Margaret Lockwood recalls the scene where she sees off her female friend at the train station.
● "Saboteur": A flashback of an envelope with the spy's address written on it.
● "TOPAZ": A short flashback on the airplane towards the end of the film, etc.

4. Flashbacks consisting only of voices:

● "JAMAICA INN": Charles Laughton's voice calling a servant, "Sagewick!", is heard in the final scene.
● "SPELLBOUND": Only Leo G. Carroll's voice saying "knew" is repeated several times.
● "FRENZY": A flashback of John Finch's voice proclaiming his innocence in court.

All flashbacks presented here are brief flashbacks of events that occurred after the start of the film, and differ from the long flashbacks of events that occurred before the film.

5. Recollections of past events
● "THE RODGER" ● "EASY VIRTUE" ● "STAGE FRIGHT" ● "I Confess" ● "MANIE"
